What are the Different Types of bottled drinking water?
The FDA has established "Standards of Identity" for bottled water sold in the U.S.
You will be surprised at the number of types of bottled water available on the
market today.
Generally, bottled water is
categorized by the source of the water as well as the method used to bottle it.
Water is usually sourced from two
main categories: previously disinfected water (like municipal water sources) or non-disinfected water (like
mineral, well or spring water). If the water has not previously been treated, a bottler will usually disinfect
it using technologies that leave no taste - like ozone or uv (ultra violet) technologies.
Water can then be further
purified using various methods such as reverse osmosis, distillation, ion exchange, carbon absorption, filtration
and so on.
Bottlers can then add elements to
the water like electrolytes, oxygen and minerals (hence, remineralization).

So, what are some of the
different types of bottled drinnking water?
Well Water
Usually from a hole tapped or
constructed into the ground. The source of the water is an unconfined underground aquifer.
Sparkling Water
Has carbon dioxide in the same
amounts it had from the source.
Artesian Water
It comes from a confined aquifer
and the water level is above the top of the aquifer. Pressure is applied by a layer of rock or clay above the
aquifer, which forces the water upwards. The underground aquifer is usually a rock formation containing the
water.
Ground Water
From underground with a pressure
at least that of atmospheric pressure.
Mineral Water
Contains at least 250 ppm total
dissolved solids (TDS) like calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium at the source. It comes from a protected
underground water source and usually comes from a spring. No minerals may be added to mineral water.
Spring Water
Comes from underground and the
water flows naturally to the surface.
Purified Water
One or more of many methods are
used to demineralize the water. It must meet the standards of "purified water" in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia. It can
come from a protected underground source or a municipal water supply.
There you have it. These are only
a few of the categories of bottled drinking water, but they make up the vast majority of what is marketed.
